Allergens: Contains Gluten (oats — some brands are gluten-free, check label).

Ingredients

  • 1 cup oatmeal
  • 1 apple, peeled and diced small
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon honey or sugar

Optional Extras

  • Cinnamon (strongly recommended)
  • Butter
  • Peanut butter
  • Milk instead of water
  • Raisins

Equipment

  • Small pot
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Stirring spoon

Instructions

  1. Combine the oatmeal, diced apple, water, and honey (or sugar) in a small pot.
  2. Add cinnamon if you have it.
  3. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the oatmeal is thick and the apple pieces are soft.
  4. Serve warm. Add butter, peanut butter, or milk if you have them.

Notes

  • Dice the apple small. Smaller pieces cook faster and distribute throughout the oatmeal better.
  • Any apple works. Sweeter varieties (Fuji, Gala) need less sugar. Tart varieties (Granny Smith) need a bit more.
  • Banana substitute: If you don't have apples, slice a banana in at the end instead.
  • Make it ahead. Overnight oats version: mix raw oats, diced apple, milk, and cinnamon in a jar. Refrigerate overnight.
  • The cinnamon really matters here. It's what makes this taste like apple pie.
