Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal
Oatmeal cooked with diced apple that softens and sweetens as it simmers. A warm breakfast that feels special but takes under 10 minutes.
Allergens: Contains Gluten (oats — some brands are gluten-free, check label).
Ingredients
- 1 cup oatmeal
- 1 apple, peeled and diced small
- 2 cups water
- 1 tablespoon honey or sugar
Optional Extras
- Cinnamon (strongly recommended)
- Butter
- Peanut butter
- Milk instead of water
- Raisins
Equipment
- Small pot
- Knife and cutting board
- Stirring spoon
Instructions
- Combine the oatmeal, diced apple, water, and honey (or sugar) in a small pot.
- Add cinnamon if you have it.
- Bring to a simmer over medium heat. Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the oatmeal is thick and the apple pieces are soft.
- Serve warm. Add butter, peanut butter, or milk if you have them.
Notes
- Dice the apple small. Smaller pieces cook faster and distribute throughout the oatmeal better.
- Any apple works. Sweeter varieties (Fuji, Gala) need less sugar. Tart varieties (Granny Smith) need a bit more.
- Banana substitute: If you don't have apples, slice a banana in at the end instead.
- Make it ahead. Overnight oats version: mix raw oats, diced apple, milk, and cinnamon in a jar. Refrigerate overnight.
- The cinnamon really matters here. It's what makes this taste like apple pie.
