Ingredients

  • ½ cup oatmeal
  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ cup applesauce

Optional Extras

  • Cinnamon (strongly recommended)
  • Honey or sugar
  • Peanut butter stirred in
  • Sliced banana on top
  • A pat of butter

Equipment

  • Small pot or microwave-safe bowl
  • Stirring spoon

Instructions

  1. Combine the oatmeal and water in a small pot. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  2. Cook for 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the oatmeal is thick and creamy.
  3. Remove from heat. Stir in the applesauce. Add cinnamon if you have it.
  4. Serve warm. Top with honey, banana, or peanut butter if you have them.

Notes

  • Microwave method: Combine oatmeal and water in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 2 minutes, stir, then stir in the applesauce.
  • The cinnamon matters here. If you have it, add it — it makes this taste like apple pie.
  • Use any applesauce. Sweetened, unsweetened, cinnamon-flavored — all work.
  • Make it more filling: Add a tablespoon of peanut butter or a handful of granola on top.
  • Dairy-free by default. Uses water instead of milk.
