VegetarianEgg-FreeNut-Free Snack
Prep: 10 min Cook: 45 min Total: 55 min Servings: 8-10 cups Difficulty: Easy

Allergens: Contains wheat (cereal, crackers) and dairy (butter). Check cereal labels for additional allergens.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups cereal (Chex, Cheerios, or any plain cereal)
  • 2 cups crackers (broken into pieces)
  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Optional Extras

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Pretzels
  • Granola bars, broken up

Equipment

  • Large baking sheet
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Oven

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 250°F.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the cereal and broken crackers together.
  3. Melt butter and mix with vegetable oil. Pour over the cereal mixture and stir until everything is coated.
  4. Add garlic powder, onion powder, and salt if you have them. Stir again.
  5. Spread the mixture on a baking sheet in an even layer.
  6. Bake for 45 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes so it toasts evenly.
  7. Let it cool completely on the pan. It gets crunchier as it cools.
  8. Store in a sealed bag or container.

Notes

  • Mix and match cereals. Any combination works. Chex and Cheerios together is classic. Rice Krispies add crunch.
  • This is a great way to use cereal nobody wants to eat plain. If the pantry gave you cereal and nobody's eating it for breakfast, turn it into a snack.
  • Keeps for a week in a sealed container at room temperature.
