Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet potatoes, cut into sticks
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Optional Extras

  • Salt
  • Garlic powder
  • Paprika
  • Cinnamon and a pinch of sugar for a sweet version
  • Ketchup for dipping

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Oven

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into sticks about ½ inch thick. Try to keep them roughly the same size so they cook evenly.
  3. Toss the sticks with vegetable oil and salt on a baking sheet. Spread in a single layer — don't crowd them or they'll steam instead of crisp.
  4. Bake for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy on the edges.
  5. Season with garlic powder, paprika, or cinnamon while still hot.

Notes

  • Don't crowd the pan. This is the most important step. Use two baking sheets if needed. Overcrowding = soggy fries.
  • Regular potatoes work too. Same method, same time.
  • No oven? Pan-fry in oil over medium heat for 12–15 minutes, turning occasionally.
  • Serve with: Any main dish, especially burgers, fish, or sandwiches.
  • Sweet or savory. Cinnamon + sugar makes them dessert-like. Salt + garlic makes them savory. Both are great.
