Tuna Melt on Toast
Tuna mixed with mayo on toast, topped with melted cheese. A warm, filling lunch or dinner that takes about 10 minutes.
Allergens: Contains fish (tuna), eggs (mayo), wheat (bread), and dairy (cheese).
Ingredients
- 1 can tuna, drained
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 4 slices bread
- 4 slices or a handful of shredded cheese
Optional Extras
- Diced onion
- Mustard
- Salt and pepper
- Pickle relish
- Hot sauce
Equipment
- Can opener
- Fork
- Bowl
- Oven or toaster oven (or skillet with lid)
Instructions
- Drain tuna and put it in a bowl. Break it up with a fork.
- Mix in mayo. Add diced onion, mustard, salt, and pepper if you have them.
- Toast the bread lightly (just enough to firm it up).
- Scoop tuna mixture onto each slice of toast. Top with cheese.
- To melt the cheese: put the open-faced sandwiches under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, or in a toaster oven, or in a covered skillet on low heat until the cheese melts.
- Eat open-faced or put two slices together as a sandwich.
Notes
- Skillet method. If you don't have an oven or toaster oven, put the topped bread in a skillet, cover with a lid, and cook on low heat for 3-4 minutes. The trapped heat melts the cheese.
- Microwave works too. Put the tuna toast on a plate and microwave for 30-45 seconds until the cheese melts. The bread won't be crispy but the cheese will be melted.
- No mayo? Mustard works as a substitute. Or just skip it and use the tuna plain with cheese.
- Use crackers instead of bread. Skip the melting step and just scoop tuna onto crackers with a slice of cheese for a no-cook version.
